The Great Indian Sex Odyssey

Last week’s cover page of India-today titled-“Sex and Women” has triggered few thoughts in my mind and I thought, “Why not write a blog discussing the same topic?” .It was the 3rd cover page by India-today since its inception highlighting the issue and they had done quite comprehensive survey about the sexual tastes of Indian men and Women. The globalization of Indian mindset, the openness in the Indian Culture, the changing and increasing Sexual demands of the Indian men and women was quite conspicuous in the survey. India has treaded a long journey from being a land of Kamasutra to being the land of free thinking and objectivism. But is it really the case?

It was once a land of Kamasutra but still talking about Sex is a taboo here. There is still a deep divide and unacceptability among the Indian men in terms of women enjoying their Sexual rights. The majority of the male respondents (65%) in the India-today survey said “Yes” when asked the question-“Would you mind if you find your wife had a relationship before the marriage?”. But why is this deep double standard among the Indian men where they think they have every right to enjoy their bachelorhood and not women. Indian men consider themselves to be open and broad-minded but there is still a mass obsession for a virgin bride. I am not trying to emphasize the point that the society should be deprived of all the morality but if you set one yardstick for men, there cannot be a different one for Women.

Sex in India is still a tool of reproduction for many and not a tool for recreation and a relationship builder. There is an urgent need to realize that it’s a great catalyst in building a good relationship and not a dirty thing. There is a need to distinguish between ‘Sex’ and ‘Fuck’. Sex, they say is the union of body and soul. It involves emotions and all the senses touch, taste, feel etc work in unison. It is not just a passing off rite that has to be performed but a process to be understood and appreciated. While ‘Fuck’ is just an act of mating, the union of flesh, which the frustrated souls resort to for quenching their lusty thirst.

There was a serious discussion going on some years back about the need to impart sex education to the youths. But in doing so, the so called caretakers of the Indian cultural and traditional values might be up against the decision. It is not something to be stuffed into the human mind but to be realized by an individual. Whether there is a serious need of imparting such an education is a moot point but still there are cases in rural India where people wear condoms entire day thinking it would cure AIDS. Things will remain same until people realize it to be an issue to be seriously looked at. Sex should not just be limited to the role of reproduction but also beyond that.
